I have been working as a software developer for over 24 years.
Things have changed radically since I started my career in 1978 after
graduating from the University of Utah with a Ph.D. in Medical Biophysics
and Computing (the field now known as Medical Informatics). During my
graduate school years I wrote software in assembly language for a Control
Data 3300. That machine occupied an entire room and was not as powerful
as today's desktop PC. It's been exciting to be involved
in a field of such rapid change.
It is an honor to work at the Huntsman Cancer Institute where I have helped
develop an application framework and components used by the other developers.
I also create front end interfaces for research databases. More recently we
have begun developing web-based interfaces using the Java language.
Besides computer application design and programming,
my joys in life are my family and singing in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
I have sung Second Tenor with the Choir since 1990 and have participated
in international tours to Central Europe/Russia in the summer of 1991,
Israel in 1993 and Southern Europe in 1999. All have been glorious
experiences!
My family consists of my beloved wife Laurel, and children Joel (26),
Bryce (24), Gretel (21), Benjamin (10) and Emma (8) (ages are as of late 2002).
Laurie is a full time homemaker; she makes our home a beautiful, peaceful
and happy place to live. I think it looks like a page from "Better Homes and
Gardens" (when we can manage to counteract the kids and keep it clean, that is!).
Joel is married to the former Kristin Hill. They live in the Washington, D.C. area
where Joel works as an Assistant Hotel Financial Director for Marriott Corp.
Joel and Kristin have a beautiful daughter named Miranda, our first grandchild;
a grandson will be arriving soon!
Bryce is married to the former Denisa Krizanova. Denisa was born and raised in Slovakia.
It has been a delight to welcome her into our family and learn of her cultural
background. She speaks several languages and she and Bryce are both studying
Linguistics. They will soon finish their undergraduate studies at BYU.
Gretel is in her senior year at BYU. This past summer she served an internship
at the Philadelphia Zoo, specializing in reptiles. She actually learned to like
snakes!
Benjamin is in fifth grade this year and Emma in third. Both are lively and
smart; they keep Laurie and me on our toes. They are both studying piano
...reluctantly. Just like when I was their age, they hate to practice.
But I'm hoping that - also like me - they'll appreciate it when they're grown.
