Peery Cousins Online

Background and Purpose

On September 1, 1994, seven persons who had found one another online, grouped together to form "Peery Cousins Online." On January 1, 1995, "Peery Cousins Newsletter Online" was begun, a bi-weekly Summary of Peery Family History for Peery Cousins Online -- A Virginia Connection. Word of mouth of this monitored newsletter increased our membership. Twenty-one issues were distributed online to members in 1995; nineteen in 1996. Schedules are shown elsewhere in this Web site.

In February 1996, the "Peery Family History Home Page" was created. On February 19, a counter was installed, followed by announcements to some genealogy locations on the Internet. In the first thirty days, there were one-hundred fifty-six visits (hits) to the page, averaging 5.1 hits per day. From this source, inquiries began resulting in new members joining our group. On March 25, 1997, the four-hundredth day, one-thousand nine-hundred hits (visits) were registered, averaging 4.7 hits per day from inception. For March to that date, two-hundred ninety-eight hits were recorded, averaging 11.9 hits per day for twenty-five days.

With its publication, "Peery Cousins Newsletter Online", and the "Peery Family History Home Page," which is related, Peery Cousins Online is positioned to share more information than ever. This in turn is expected to bring in more qualified members and additional Peery information. Our mission, to share Peery and related/allied information, is working here.

We began with four emigrant Scots-Irish brothers who settled in Augusta County, Virginia, probably near Staunton in the Shenandoah Valley in 1740-42, over 250 years ago. Their names (#1) were John, Thomas, James and George. Only persons who are directly related or allied to any Peery line are admitted to our group. Sharing information is our purpose.

A fifth person, Joseph Peery, thought to be related to the four brothers, associated with those who had emigrated from Germany. He married a German. Separate research has revealed over the years that "The Palatinate" is an ancient source of Peery ancestry. It is believed that many emigrated through The Netherlands, to England, to the American Colonies in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Palatine information can be seen on this Home Page in the "Helpful Research Sources" section.
