EDITOR'S NOTE
=============
Responses to the Questionnaire No. 1 have resulted in constructive direction
and focus with an indication of strong support. Implementation and phasing
in all suggestions has begun. After the analysis has been completed a summary
report will be issued. We had a fifty-five percent response by the February
9th deadline date. Thanks to all who came through on time with your
suggestions, opinions, support and encouragement for what we are doing

For whatever reason, nine members did not make it. While we all are busy,
everyone's view is important, and a 100% response is requested. To those
in the second group I ask that you follow through with your comments as
soon as you can. Views expressed by members reveal their level of
interest in different aspects of our organization and publications. A
follow-up analysis will be made of the additional information received.
In the event a member no longer wishes to participate, please let me
know. Sharing information about the PEERY name, and helping one another
to resolve research problems is our main purpose.

Update - Peery Database: Much more data has been entered. Fortunately, our
published resources are extensive, requiring time consuming data entry. The
backlog is large. Our goal is to make it the most comprehensive PEERY
database available. Among other things, the database is being coordinated
with information presented in the GENERATIONS series compiled by S. Paul
Peery (Orlando). Differences in spellings, dates, and other data are recorded
in the database in a footnote behind the name. Maintenance is ongoing to make
it an accurate, reliable and "clean" source of information. The Newsletter
provides a forum for open discussion of all matters concerning the
database.

As a courtesy to members, please acknowledge messages received from those
listed in our directory. The directory is being actively used by many of our
members. Some are concerned with confidentiality; others are not. I keep the
latest directory near my computer for ready reference as needed. If your
listing changes for any reason, or is incomplete, please send me the needed
data to bring it up-to-date. It should be correct.

Finally, another dimension has been added that will have a direct affect on
the content of the Newsletter. We now are included in a Home Page under
development on the World Wide Web dedicated to the PEERY surname and related
persons. Construction takes place every day in text only. It is being paired
with the Newsletter, further sharpening the publication's focus.

HOME PAGES OF MEMBERS
World Wide Web (WWW)
=====================
I am pleased to announce that on February 14, 1996, the "Paul D. Peery Home
Page" was begun on the World Wide Web. Construction has been taking place
daily ever since, with the format being reshaped along the way. It is
dedicated to and will later be renamed "Peery Family History Home Page,"
or perhaps something shorter like "Peery Home Page," or "Peery Homepage." If
you have a preference, please let me know. In addition to textual information,
carefully selected links are being added. The possibilities for developing
this page are endless. It is completely changing my way of thinking here.

Including the above, five PCO members currently have a Home Page on the
World Wide Web. Changes can occur at any time. Family information is
contained in each one, some more than others. You can access all of them
at the following addresses:

  1. Lynn J. Bernhard - Lynn's Home Page (Provo, UT)
     http://www.itsnet.com/home/Lynnb/public_html/index.html

  2. William J. Clayton - Bill Clayton's Home Page (Tyler, TX)
     http://www.gower.net/bclayton/

  3. Tyler J. Jarvis - Tyler's Home Page (Mississippi State, MS)
     http://www2.MsState.edu/~jarvis/index.html

  4. Beth E. Peery - Beth's Home Page (Hartford, CT)
     http://shakti.trincoll.edu/~bpeery/

  5. Paul D. Peery - Paul D. Peery Home Page (Salt Lake City, UT)
     http://www.cc.utah.edu/~pdp7277

Bill Clayton has materially reconstructed his page, focusing on his family
genealogy, which he announced on February 16. Included is a segment on his
Peery line. Using a conversion software program, he added his PAF database to
the page. Much information is available here. Bill is one of two known PCO
members known to have descended from George #1, one of the four brothers who
settled in Augusta County, VA in 1740-42. From Virginia, Bill's ancestors
emigrated to Tennessee to Mississippi to Texas. Mary Peery is our other
member whose husband descends from George #1.

Lynn, Tyler and Beth all have interesting Home Pages. You can learn more
about them by making a visit.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
=====================

From: S. Paul Peery (Orlando, Florida)
Subject: Using "Generations"

To those of you following the article "Generations: Descendants of Thomas
Peery, The Pioneer" and to new members of Peery Cousins On-Line, this is a
reminder:

You can always check the numbers preceding the name to find out who the
parents were. Example: In the Fifth Generation check the number "316" Logan
Howard Peery, now return to the Fourth Generation and look for number "316"
under children and you will see that "316" is the son of 109 James Madison
Peery.

The same procedure is continued back to No. 1 Thomas Peery.

. . . .
When I wrote to you before and notified you of my home page on the Internet I
said there was nothing about the PEERY family on it. That has changed!

Since then I have completely rebuilt my home page which is now devoted almost
exclusively to genealogy. I now have three pages of PEERY family history in
narrative form that includes some photos and scans of old newspapers (and I
will be adding to this). I also have my entire PAF data base in hypertext
that can be accessed from my home page. You may find this interesting. Eugene
Stark has written a shareware program called "ged2html" that will convert any
GEDCOM into HTML format. If you want to see a demonstration of this go to my
home page at:
"http://www.gower.net/bclayton/" then click on "My Family Tree."

OUR ANCESTRAL VIRGINIA - Part 4
By Steven L. Jamison, Los Altos, California
===========================================
Tazewell
--------
Main Street is the heart of historic Tazewell ... but the heart is failing.
Many of the buildings are in poor repair and some are empty and boarded up.
The sidewalks are cracked and irregular. Even the county courthouse is in
dire need of a good coat of paint. The Chamber of Commerce told us about
renewal plans that would restore some of the town's earlier grandeur, about
repaving and repainting, about brick sidewalks, and even about a street car
... a motorized vehicle on rubber tires rather than the horse-drawn street
car of its past that ran on rails.

Much of the residential area surrounding Main Street retains its former
beauty: elegant old homes meticulously cared for, with charming landscaping
and well-trimmed lawns. The Litz mansion is particularly impressive.

A little further out are newer areas with shopping malls, movie theaters,
gas stations, and fast food eateries. Not much different than what you find
in many parts of the US.

But the people are not typical. When Rita and I find the Historical Society
building closed and turn away disappointed, a lady across the street gives us
a tentative wave. We not only return the wave, but cross to talk to her. We
tell her that my father had been born there as well as my Jamison and Peery
grandparents. She says, "Hi, cousin." Ashley Nuckols is her married name, but
she is a Peery, a descendant of Thomas Peery, who is a brother of our James
Peery.

She escorts us to the Virginia Room of the county library and pulls down
several books she thinks we will be interested in. She is right. She
introduces us to several people in the library ... all relatives of hers and,
she says, relatives of mine also. She walks us around town, indicating points
of interest like the statue of the Confederate soldier in front of the court
house and the monument to William Peery who had given the land for this city
that was to be the site of the county government. All in all, she spent about
two hours with us.

Just a little west of town, we visit the Crab Orchard Museum and Pioneer
Park, a museum of a quality worthy of a much larger city, like Richmond or
Roanoke. Artifacts of the area, from prehistoric through the Civil War era
are attractively displayed. I buy a couple of books from Nancy Banes Peery,
another cousin, who is on duty at the museum.

The adjacent Pioneer Park gave me a real sense of life in the early days.
It contains thirteen historic log and stone building furnished to reflect
the period of about 1830. The cabin on the far right was built about 1805
and recently moved to this park. It had belonged to Major David Peery.

The following day, we spend several hours in the Tazewell County Library
and Court House. There is much information here on the Peerys and almost
nothing on the Jamisons. All of William Hardy Jamison's ancestors had, for
three generations, lived in Washington County. Although William Hardy
raised a large family in Burke's Garden, all of them eventually left
Tazewell County for Cache Valley, Utah. The Peerys, however, were and still
are, one of the fine families of Tazewell County, Virginia.

If you are interested in seeing what Tazewell County looks like, see
the upcoming Lassie movie. It was filmed almost exclusively in Tazewell
County. But for Rita and me, we have our own pictures and our remembrances.
They provide the stage on which my, and your, ancestors lived and died.
Now, I understand them better. And with that understanding comes added
appreciation for them and for our heritage.

Peery (End of Second Portion of Fifth Generation) OBITUARIES Alexander Townsend Peery (1879-1939) ==================================== OBITUARY Webster Progress; Eupora, Mississippi January 5, 1939 ALEX T. PEERY LAID TO REST Alexander Townsend Peery, retired banker and civic leader, died at the family residence here Monday night at 6:45 o'clock, following a sudden attack of pneumonia. He had been in ill health for about ten years and had been bed-ridden for two years, invalided as the result of four strokes of paralysis suffered during the decade. Prior to his illness, Mr. Peery played an important part in Eupora's civic, social, religious and business life. Business men regarded him as an astute banker and his counsel was often sought in the early business activity which witnessed Eupora's initial recognition as an agricultural trading center. He began his business career in Winona where he served as office deputy under his father, John Peery, who was sheriff of Montgomery county. Later he was employed by the Bank of Winona from whence he went to the Grenada Bank at Grenada. In 1905 he was appointed cashier of the Bank of Eupora and later organized the Merchants & Farmers Bank here serving that institution as cashier until it was merged with the Bank of Eupora. Following this, for a number of years he was in the insurance business here. He served one term as treasurer of Webster county; for a number of years was on the board of trustees of Eupora schools, and was a member of the local board of aldermen for four years. He was a member of Eupora Methodist Church and served many years as treasurer of the Board of Stewards. Mr. Peery was born at Stewart March 5, 1879, son of John Peery. His grandfather was William B. Peery, major of cavalry in the Confederate army and owner of a large plantation which embraced much of the land lying along Big Black River in both Webster and Montgomery counties. Funeral services were held at the residence Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. E. G. Mohler, his pastor, conduction, assisted by the Rev. J. B. Middleton, Baptist pastor. Burial was made in Eupora cemetery. Survivors in his immediate family are: His widow, Mrs. Clyde Hester Peery; three daughters, Mrs. Ned Lee, Eupora, Mrs. L. A. Clayton, Eupora, and Mrs. F. P. McElwrath, Jr., Harlingen, Texas; two sons James Robert Peery, Eupora, and Allison Peery, Eupora; and one brother, Henry D. Peery of Eupora. -------------------- Source: William A. TAZEWELL COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY (TCHS) ========================================= The Tazewell County Historical Society, based in Tazewell, Virginia, is important as a source of family information for current and former residents, and those who have genalogical roots there.
