EDITOR'S NOTE
=============
With this issue we begin the new year with Volume 2 of the Newsletter.
During January, the Quarterly/Annual Report for 1995 will be distributed to
our members. Developments occurred last year that took us to a higher level
in shared information and membership growth. There is much more to be done
toward further tweaking and fine tuning our organization and publications as
we build our base for the long-term. This will continue as an ongoing effort
of change and innovation.
An annual questionnaire will soon be sent to members for determining what you
have to say regarding our activities. The purpose is to arrive at a consensus
of opinion as to what segments are liked best about Peery Cousins Online and
its publications. It will provide an opportunity for members to review our
focus and to reveal opinions as to what might be done to improve what we do.
The higher the percentage of replies, the more valid will be the analyzed
results. A summary report will then serve as a guide as we move forward.
While we are still a small organization, with a membership of twenty-three at
December 31, 1995, we showed considerable year-to-year growth. Our total rose
228.6%, or 3.29 times that of a year ago on a net gain of sixteen members.
Steve Jamison is editor of "Family Newsletter," by and for the descendants of
Jefferson Davis Jamison and Nancy Loucinda Peery, distributed quarterly to
over two-hundred fifty members of the Jamison family. He has granted permis-
sion for us to use "content"--also known as "intellectual property"--from
this publication for our Newsletter. We begin in this issue with excerpts
from his Winter 1995 issue.
Steve and his wife, Rita, traveled to Washington, Smyth and Tazewell Counties
last summer. He reported what they saw under the title "Our Ancestral
Virginia." There is significance in what he relates as James Peery #1 married
Katherine Jameson, from whom many Peery Cousins Online members are direct
descendants. We know nothing more than her name. It is hoped that a Jamison/
Jameson link can one day be proven to Katherine through research. As we read
about the Jamison's, it could well be we are reading of Katherine's relations.
Regardless, as Nancy Loucinda Peery is a direct descendant of James #1, she
and all her descendants are cousins to members of Peery Cousins Online.
Thus, Jamison Family History is part of Peery Family History.
OUR ANCESTRAL VIRGINIA - Part 1

Research Results
----------------
When Edward Jamison came to this country, he and his family arrived in
Philadelphia and settled in York County, Pennsylvania. After leaving York
County, Edward took his family to Augusta County, Virginia, perhaps near
Staunton. This is where the Peery brothers lived in the mid-1700s.
Now you may think that the Peerys and Jamisons did not get together until
Nancy Loucinda Peery married Jefferson Davis Jamison. Not so. James Peery
[#1], the great-great grandfather of Nancy, married Katherine Jamison
[Jameson] in about 1746. Furthermore, James' brother, Thomas, had a son named
John who married Sarah Jamison in about 1755. Perhaps Edward is related to
one or both of these Jamison women. Perhaps these family ties are what
brought Edward to Augusta County.
Learning more about Katherine would be of great interest to us since she is
a direct ancestor. And, perhaps in the process, we could find a connection to
Edward. Just what avenues of research should be pursued is a question to be
resolved. Nolan Jamison is coordinating our efforts in this regard.
The Editors's Trip Report to Tazewell County - Summer 1995
----------------------------------------------------------
Dense forests of maples, pines, and locust trees cover the rolling hills
and valleys except where they have been cleared away for farms, pastures,
cities, broad highways, and winding byways that follow clear-running creeks.
The weather is warm and humid enough to make one appreciate a cold lemonade,
a shady tree or an air-conditioned car. Scanning the radio frequencies, we
pick up lots of Christian programming and country music like "I Should've
Aster Faster." The Editor, Steve Jamison (William Jamison, Jefferson Davis
Jamison) and his wife, Rita, are on the trail of our Jamison and Peery
ancestors.
Chilhowie
---------
Based on the land records of Edward Jamison and his son, John, we are able
to find the approximate locations of their farms on the middle fork of the
Holston River near Mulberry and Plum Creeks. This was once well inside
Washington County, but subsequent divisions now place this land near or in
Smyth (pronounced Smith) County on State Road 609 near the town of Chilhowie.
This fertile land is used for grazing cattle, for growing lots of corn and a
little tobacco.
Our map shows cemetery 218 to be on Road 609 just inside the Washington
County line. This is where Inis Hurst, also a descendant of Edward and John,
found their graves many years ago. But we can't find the cemetery, so stop at
a farm house and ask. Polly McCready tells us that this area is sometimes
referred to as Jamison Gap and that the Jamison/McCready cemetery is at the
top of the hill behind their house.
McCready . . . the name has a familiar ring. It should. William Jamison,
the grandfather of Jefferson Davis Jamison, married Mary Ann (Polly)
McCready. His sister, Sarah Jamison, married Thomas McCready.
Carefully avoiding brambles and "cow pies," we work our way slowly to the
top of the hill. When Inis Hurst was here, the gravestone of John Jamison was
lying face down on the ground but, setting it upright, the writing was still
visible. Now, neither Edward's nor John's name is legible on any of the
crumbling stones.
But looking down from that hill, one has a panoramic view of the thousand
acres that were once Jamison lands.
Driving to Glad Springs, we find the Presbyterian Church that the Jamisons
attended after 1792. From there, we were given directions to the Ebbing
Springs church which Edward and his family attended when they first came to
Washington County in 1772. It is now the meeting place for the Primitive
Baptist Church of Chilhowie. The brick church at Glade Springs has been added
since 1792 and still serves the Presbyterian congregation there. To attend
either of these churches, our ancestors would have ridden about five or six
miles from their homes at Jamison Gap.
This John Jamison and his wife, Nancy Hayter, had ten children including
our direct ancestor, William Jamison. William had four children by Mary Ann
McCready and two more, including our direct ancestor, William Hardy Jamison,
by his second wife, Rebecca Larimer. These children and grandchildren of John
Jamison were all born in Washington County, presumably on family farms near
what is now Chilhowie.
But William Hardy Jamison moved north to Burke's Garden in Tazewell County,
married Mary Rebecca Litz, and raised a family of eleven children, including
our direct ancestor, Jefferson Davis Jamison.

Subject: Tombstone Inscription
This was told as a true story:
An inscription on a tombstone in a small cemetery consisted of only a recipe
for potato salad. Finding this very curious, the researcher made her way to
the cemetery records office to inquire about the oddity. "Oh yes," replied
the official, "Myrtle always said that the only way anyone would get her
potato salad recipe was over her dead body!"....
Is that great or what......
