Introduction

Successful communication of Family History and Genealogy to an extended family readership requires a dedicated, committed Editor. High motivation and commitment are part of that. Gathering information and presenting it in a neat, presentable format is critical. It just doesn't happen.

Individual family members can submit to the Editor cogent historical family information they have. When it is specific to their immediate family and its ancestry, it is fresh material for the reader. Importantly, the content serves to strengthen the larger family by informing it about the lives of their relatives. Submissions, therefore, play a significant role in the quality and readability of the publication. All Editors need and seek out meaningful material.

The Editor of a family publication usually works alone. He/she is involved in a pragmatic, creative process of planning, research, information gathering, storing, organizing, writing, layout, printing and distribution of each issue. It takes imagination and effort to bring balance to an issue. When photos, graphics and color are included, access to specialized equipment is essential.

The finished product will speak for itself. When the reading audience looks forward to each issue, the Editor is fulfilling a need. Time and content demands determine the frequency of publication, which can range from monthly to quarterly, to annually, usually on a fixed schedule. The shorter the frequency, the greater the demands for delivery, usually requiring a deadline.
