Thursday, February 11, 1999 -- The New York Times reported on the front page that President Bill Clinton was prepared to put all his efforts into defeating as many of the House impeachment managers as possible in the 2000 elections and restore control of Congress to the Democrats. The Times article infuriated Republicans, who accused the president of arrogantly seeking revenge against the 13 House "managers" who pressed allegations of perjury and obstruction of justice on the floor of the Senate.

He also said "This can be and must be a time of reconciliation and renewal for America." A reporter asked whether in his heart he could truly forgive the political rivals who had pressed for his removal from office. President Clinton replied "I believe any person who asks for forgiveness has to be prepared to give it."

The White House had collected new dossiers, complete with financial records, FBI investigative information and IRS reports on these people.

Saturday, February 13, 1999 -- The Dallas Morning News -- "The impeachment battle is over, but it's only a cease-fire in the scandal wars. . . . Independent Counsel Kenneth W. Starr is still investigating President Clinton and his associates on a variety of fronts, some of which could rekindle the fire that sparked impeachment. . . . Above all looms the big question: Will Starr try to obtain a criminal indictment of President Clinton before his term expires in 2001?" "The Office of Independent Counsel also is pursuing an outgrowth of the [Monica] Lewinsky investigation. . . ."
