Revolutionary War Pension Application - James Peery, Jane [Gilmore]
Peery
On this 6th day of May 1842, personally appeared before me, John McGill, an
acting justice of the peace for the County of Hickman aforesaid, Jane Peery,
a resident of the County of Hickman and state aforesaid, aged about 87 years,
who being duly sworn, according to law, doth on her oath make the following
Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made for the
windows of officers and soldiers of the Revolutionary War, by act of Congress
of July 4th, 1836, that Declarant intermarried with James Peery in the County
of Augusta and State of Virginia in the year 1777 on the 8th day of December,
and that she continued to live with the said James Peery as his wife until 11
March 1829, when the said James Peery departed this life in the County of
Hickman and State of Tennessee, leaving Declarant, his widow and relict.
Declarant states that her said husband, after her intermarriage, enlisted in
the Army of the United States, and served a tour of four months under Captain
James Tate and that he was at the battle of Cowpens under Genl. Morgan and
fought with the Rifleman that day, and that after the Battle of the Cowpens
he returned home and remained a short time whence he was drafted for a second
tour, and served under the command of Captain James Tate, that he was at the
battle of Guilford Court House, when Captain Tate was killed, Declarant
does not remember the names of the other officers under whom the said James
Peery served during the war of the Revolution, nor the lengthy of time which
he served the second tour.
Declarant also states that said was at the Taking of Cornwallis at York, but
cannot state the officer under whom he served, or the duration of the Term of
his service other than that he belonged to the militia, to best of her
recollection and belief.
Declarant further states that the name of the said James Peery, her late
husband, is not on the Pension Roll of any agency in any state, nor did he in
his lifetime ever draw a pension for his services, during the war of the
Revolution, nor has Declarant since the death of said James Peery ever
draw a pension for his services, or ______?, an application for and before
the present declaration, is still a widow, and hereby relinquishes any
claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the ______?, signed Jane (x,
her mark) Peery.
Witnesses by John McGill, J.P. (John McGill: certifies that the above
applicant is the widow and relict of said James Peery, and says Jane Peery is
unable from age and bodily infirmity to attend a court of _____to exhibit her
declaration...).
This day personally appeared before me, John McGill, an acting justice of the
peace in and for said county, William Peery, aged 77, who being duly sworn
according to law, deposeth and sayeth that he was acquainted with James Peery
who lived in August County, in the state of Virginia and that _______? battle
of Guilford the length of time he served there I don't recollect, as I
returned home sick from the siege of York, I met him in Richmond going down
to the Army at York but the length of time he served there I can't remember
nor the officer he was under. James Peery was married in Augusta County in
the State of Virginia in the year 1777, December the 8th, to Jain Gilmore,
and they lived together as man and wife til his death which was the 11 day of

Thu, 20 Feb 1997 - She descends from John Peery of Hickman County, TN,
who married Martha Wallis. John was the firstborn of George Peery #1.
Editor's Note: Charles Lee Peery wrote a book, Genealogy of James
Peery, about this James Peery, second son of George Peery #1. James
Peery and Jane [Gilmore] Peery were the parents of triplets and three
other children.
