James Peery Hurt Sr. [not Perry], 82, of Sykesville, (MD), died Friday, Nov. 8, 1996, at his home.

Born Jan. 10, 1914, he was the son of the late George W. and Ida Bailey Hurt. He was the husband of Elizabeth Shipley Hurt. He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church, the Maryland Farm Bureau, and the Sykesville Moose Lodge. He was a charter member of the West Friendship Volunteer Fire Co.

Surviving, in addition to his wife are sons James P. Hurt Jr. of Sykesville, Gerald F. Hurt of Arnold [MD]; sisters Elizabeth Amoss of Taneytown [MD], Katherine Ariington of Mt. Airy [MD], Virginia Slagle of Gainesville, Fla., Mary Slagle of Woodbine [MD]; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held 9 a.m. Monday at St. James United Methodist Church, West Friendship, with the Rev. Ed Voorhar officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. View Cemetery, Marriottsville.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Haight Funeral Home and Chapel, Md. 32 near Eldersburg. If desired, contributions may be made to St. James United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or to the Howard County Hospice.

James was the first child born to his parents after they left Tazewell County, VA. His ancestors were:
