Dear Family,
A year ago last fall on my way from New York to Washington, I
spent a weekend in Tazewell, Virginia. Tazewell, as you will recall, is
where Grandfather and Grandmother Peery lived prior to coming to Utah in
1864.
It is a beautiful country in these hills near the western border
of Virginia. Tazewell is still a very charming small town with beautiful
old homes. Burkes Gardens [Burke's Garden], where Grandfather had his last
store which was burned during the Civil War, is a beautiful little valley
surrounded by tree covered hills. At the present time it is used largely
for grazing. This is a fine blue grass country. I am sure you would enjoy
tremendously visiting Tazewell. They still refer to Grandfather and
Grandmother as Cousin David and Cousin Leticia [Letitia].
Shortly after I returned home I received a letter from one of our
cousins, the Higginbothams, enclosing a letter written in 1895 by
Grandfather giving some of the background of his family. It contains a
great deal of information which I am sure you would be interested in and
I have had a copy made for which is enclosed.
Sincerely yours,
(s) Taylor
[Horace Taylor Peery]
P.S. In case you ever decide to go to Tazewell, it is easy to do. You
go by Norfolk & Western, stop off at Bluefield, West Virginia. Tazewell
is only a few miles from Bluefield.
Note: Horace Taylor Peery (Horace Eldredge Peery, David Harold Peery,
Major David Peery, John Peery, James Peery #1) is a son of Horace Eldredge
Peery and Sarah Jane Taylor; and grandson of David Harold Peery and
Elizabeth Letitia Higginbotham Peery.
