Think most PostDocs are headed for tenure-track positions?
According to NSF PostDoc data: Of those in first PostDocs in 1993, 13% were in tenure-track positions two years later; for those in second or more PostDocs in 1993, 16% were in tenure-track positions in 1995.
There were 26,000 PostDocs in doctorate-granting institutions in science and engineering in 1995 (a 32% increase since 1988). There has been no corresponding increase in the number of tenure-track positions.
