| Creative activities are an integral and essential ingredient of the Summer Language Program. Artistic expression is common to all cultures and students should feel comfortable approaching this subject, regardless of background or previous art training. Emphasis is placed on personal development, discovery, and the means to enjoy the opportunity for visual self-expression. The activities involve studio work; this is the practical hands-on use of various techniques and materials. The other component of the art activity is to make students aware of West Coast indigenous art and culture. |
Other creative activities include:
| Physical activities are an important and exciting aspect of the program. What other programs can offer the diversity and stimulation you receive at Pearson College? Facilities for sports activities reflect the College's concern for developing the whole person, while taking advantage of the unique northern marine and forest environment. Students can participate in sailing, kayaking, and canoeing in Pedder Bay. The swimming pool is always available for student use. Nearby Matheson Lake provides a short hike and exhilarating swim in crystal clear, clean water. Weekly tournaments are organized for soccer and baseball enthusiasts. |
Waterfront: The College docks and
waterfront facilities on the shore of Pedder Bay offer unique opportunities
for water oriented outdoor recreation. The College has small sailboats
and kayaks available for students.
Swimming Pool: The indoor, heated
Molson Swimming Pool is used as a training ground where students can practice
the techniques of kayaking, as well as enjoy swimming for recreation. The
pool building also contains weight training equipment and a ping pong table.
Sailing: The Pearson College Sailing
Program is an activity which is physically challenging. The activity is
designed to teach students how to work in a team with ample opportunity
to build leadership skills within the team context.

The purpose of the performing arts
program is to encourage conversational English and to introduce students
to ideas and activities that they may never have had a chance to do previously.
Such activities include choir,
drama, and dance. (click for more pictures)
For example, in our drama program, all students contribute to the writing and developing of a play which is then presented by the group to the other students on the final night of celebration. This activity encourages self-expression, group dynamics and teamwork. Last years' performances included twists on popular movies and fairy tales, as well as an X-files type drama. Students are encouraged to sing and dance traditional songs from their culture. In addition, concerts are held at the College to present music and other cultural activities from Canada. |
| Other activities include trips to Race
Rocks where students can spot whales, seals, sea lions, and other marine
life.
Another evening activity is a trip to the observatory where students can gaze at the stars through some of the finest astronomy equipment in the province. |
