AIMS OF THE
PROGRAM
The Summer Language Program at Lester B. Pearson
College was created to offer international students the opportunity of
experiencing an intensive English language program, integrating West Coast
culture and state-of-the-art language instruction. Emphasis is placed on
whole learning instruction. The program incorporates the latest Sony Language
Laboratory facilities with audio, video, and computer technologies. The
curriculum is taught by fully qualified and experienced native English
speaking ESL teachers (see Faculty).
Although the English Summer Language Program considers
a rigorous academic program as part of its core success, our philosophy
is to link language learning with a wide range of physical, creative and
theatre arts activities (see Activities Program).
After classes we offer activities which are directly linked to the language
acquisition program in the classroom. Through these activities students
can master new skills and acquire an enriched technically specific vocabulary.
We complement our program with a full lecture series.
The lecturers are generally Lester B. Pearson College faculty or other
specialists from the community (see lecturers).
The lecture series is based on the International Baccalaureate's approach
to language acquisition. The lecturers discuss a wide range of global issues.
A sample of topics includes “concerns for the environment while trying
to manage a resource economy,” “the struggle by West Coast indigenous people
in retaining their culture,” or “the impact of technological change on
humanity”. In addition, on weekends students go on special excursions.
Students come from many different countries with one purpose- to improve their knowledge and ability of the English Language. In the process, they leave with much, much more. By learning with students from other cultures, they acquire an appreciation of their own culture, they establish contacts for future networking, opening new opportunities for career advancement.
