COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the end of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Critical reflect on the teaching and learning process.
2. Describe the 8 components of a comprehensive school health program, explain the rationale and inherent problems associated with each component, and the health educator's role and responsibility in each area.
3. Explain the profile of a potential student in the secondary school and the four assumptions made about students.
4. Describe the basic content taught in secondary schools in Utah and the ethical, moral and political concerns surrounding some content areas, and analyze the role of health educators regarding controversial issues.
5. Write goals and behavior objectives for a curriculum and specific lesson plan.
6. Create a curriculum outline and at least three specific lesson plans and demonstrate competency in teaching those lessons.
7. Describe the characteristics of a positive emotional climate and list at least 5 classroom management techniques that should be employed to improve that climate.
8. Utilize learning-style information in creating learning experiences to reach all students, regardless of learning and/or teaching style.
9. Demonstrate the utilization of at least three different teaching techniques and an evaluation technique in several teaching situations.

ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTIONS:

Behavioral objectives + Semester outline: Semester outline should include a list of what you would teach in one semester (18 weeks) and how many days spent on each topic. For the behavior objectives: write the "topic" or a conceptual statement for your 3 behavioral objectives. Write 3 objectives, including at least one objective for knowledge and one for either attitude or psychomotor (skill) area. And finally explain how you would evaluate each objective, i.e. observation, interview, written test, etc.

CIQ's: will be explained in class.

Observation of 2 teachers:  Explanation from instructor

Test questions: Write 3 true-false questions, 3 multiple choice questions and 3 short answer questions as part of an evaluation tool for one topic area (could relate and be used as part of your mini presentation). Be sure to include appropriate instructions for the student, as would be found on an exam.

Teaching activities/ideas: Create 3 different teaching activities from 3 of the following 6 topics: (1)healthy self, (2) human development/relationships, (3) nutrition/fitness, (4) consumer/community health, (5) either substance abuse prevention, and (6) disease/HIV education. Run off copies for each member in class. The activity should only take 15-25 minutes and the write-up must follow designated format which will be provided. One activity/idea from the internet and the other two from other sources (Give source for each activity)

Mini Presentation: You will present two 30-minute teaching presentation on a subject you will sign up for. A lesson plan should be written and submitted before your presentations. Also copies of the lesson plans should be made for each member of the class. You will need to have at least one visual aids and at least two other different teaching techniques (not including lecture) as part of each of your presentations. You will need to use an evaluation tool for one of the presentations. Dissemination of information is not the purpose of this assignment-- using different techniques to involve students is the objective.
